This
Website illustrates how I have photographed medieval churches and cathedrals. I
hope that the Website will eventually contain as many as a dozen or more sets of
images from France, Italy, Portugal and Spain.
I am calling these sets of images ‘panels’, by analogy with sets of prints often seen at an exhibition. At the moment I am displaying only one panel, which contains 18 black and white photographs. These were taken in the period between 1984 and 1989, and I have drawn upon prints of about A3 size that are in my collection. Most of them were taken on a large format camera, the Wista Field 54 that takes negatives about 5 inches x 4 inches.
The panel also includes three photographs of woodcarvings taken on a 35mm camera. All the images are deliberately reproduced fairly large, as there is normally a great deal of detail in a typical view of a church interior which simply cannot be seen on a small image.
Viewing Images
Larger images may be viewed by clicking on any thumbnail image.
Alternatively, the
button may be pressed. This will download a very high resolution image,
typically 3000 x 2000 pixels format, and many megabytes in size and may be
examined in detail by zoom and pan in Internet Explorer or by saving and opening
the file in an alternative program. We only
recommend this option if you have a high speed internet link unless you are
willing to wait a long time for the picture to be downloaded.
